Changes to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS)

We want to provide a mental health service that better meets the needs of children, young people, perinatal women and their families across South Australia.

In 2017, we consulted with consumers, carers, staff, unions, and key partners on a proposed new organisational structure to support a new model of care, which would ensure we are providing the best mental health care to our clients.

The structure has now been endorsed and CAMHS is moving forward with implementation. The structure addresses the final recommendations from thePDF icon2014 Review of South Australian CAMHS (PDF - 4.3mb), which looked at how CAMHS could provide better care.

What is changing?

As part of the CAMHS Redesign, we are:

  • Changing the organisational structure of CAMHS to enhance multi-disciplinary focused services and ensure all consumers benefit from access to multi-disciplinary perspectives in treating mental health.
  • Creating new services, such as ‘CAMHS Connect’, a new phone line to make it easier for  clients and key partners to access CAMHS
  • Changing the way that speech pathology and eating disorder services are delivered so that they are more accessible.
  • Employing more Aboriginal workers to provide culturally appropriate care.

When will the changes happen?

We are currently working with our staff and partners to plan how and when we implement each service change. It is likely that changes will take place at different sites at different times throughout 2019.

We will keep you updated about any service changes that may affect you well before they happen, and welcome any feedback as we move forward.
