Clinical Services

The Rheumatology Unit provides a state-wide service in all aspects of paediatric rheumatology for infants, children and adolescents less than 18 years of age. The services extend to the Northern Territory, Western NSW and Western Victoria. We are a multi-disciplinary team with expertise in the full range of rheumatological diseases including:

  • Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis
  • Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
  • Juvenile Dermatomyositis
  • Scleroderma & Systemic Sclerosis
  • Chronic-Non-Bacterial Osteomyelitis
  • Auto-inflammatory diseases including: Behcets disease, Familial Mediterranean Fever, Cryopyrin-Associated Periodic Syndrome, TNF-Receptor Associated Periodic Syndrome, Mevalonate Kinase Deficiency, Aicardi-Gouttieres Syndrome, Proteosome-Associated Autoinflammatory Syndrome, etc
  • Rare forms of vasculitis: Poly-Arteritis Nodosa, Granulomatous Poly-Angiitis, Microscopic Poly-Angiitis, Primary Angiitis of the CNS, and Takayasu’s Arteritis

Services Include

  • Inpatient specialist care and consultation
  • Outpatient clinics in paediatric rheumatology
    • Monday afternoon: 13:30-17:00
    • Tuesday afternoon: 14:00 – 17:00
  • Therapeutic procedures: intra-articular steroid injections

How to access the service

A referral is needed from a medical practitioner. 
Referral letters should contain

  • full name
  • date of birth
  • address
  • telephone number
  • whether or not your child will be treated as a public or private patient
  • parent/carer's names
  • Medicare number
  • emergency contact (if required)

Once the referral has been received the Unit Secretary will advise you of the appointment time either by telephone or by letter.

Laboratory Diagnostic and Investigational Services

We offer a full range of investigations for rheumatic diseases including blood and urine analysis, genetic studies, X-ray, ultrasound, CT, and MRI scan
