Dentistry – Paediatric Dental Unit
The Paediatric (children's) Dental Unit provides a wide range of dental
services for eligible children including:
ongoing dental assessment and treatment for children with dental needs requiring
management in a hospital environment
dental care for children under general anaesthetic
emergency after hours dental treatment.
The Unit runs daily outpatient clinics and daily theatre lists. Phone
advice is available when possible.
Dental Staff work collaboratively with the SA School Dental Service (SADS),
the University of Adelaide and private dental practitioners.
The Unit is involved in teaching dentistry, with lectures to nursing,
medical, dental undergraduate and postgraduate students in clinics, operating
theatre sessions and research.
How to access the service
Appointments are by referral only from medical or dental practitioners
addressed to the Dental Unit Head.

The cost of dental treatment is not covered by Medicare. Charges may
apply for some treatments.
The School Dental Service offers dental services for all children under 18 years who live or go to school in South Australia. Call your local clinic to make an appointment for your child or submit your details using the appointment request form where we will phone you to make an appointment. Research Activity
Current research projects include:
- Single midline incisors and their relation to midline defects
- Dental morphology in patients with craniosynostosis and/or cleft lip and
palate
- Dental health of mothers of preterm babies
- Risk factors associated with gross caries in our under five year old
patients.
