Paediatric Major Trauma Service

WCH Paediatric EmergencySerious injury, also called major trauma is the leading cause of death in children and adolescents in Australia and is a significant cause of disability.

The Women's and Children's Hospital is the designated Paediatric Major Trauma Service for South Australia as well as for the Northern Territory, western Victoria and south-west New South Wales and provides care for children with major trauma aged under 16 years. Patients aged 16 years and over are more appropriately managed by the Adult Major Trauma Service at Royal Adelaide Hospital or Flinders Medical Centre.

The WCH Paediatric Trauma Service participates in the full continuum of paediatric trauma care.

This includes pre-hospital care (MedSTAR), emergency in-hospital management, intensive care, surgical management and rehabilitation. To provide this care, WCH is staffed by a full range of medical and surgical specialists as well as specialist nursing and allied health staff.

The WCH Paediatric Trauma Service recognises the importance of child-focused psychosocial support for the patient and family and has recently appointed a world-first Trauma Family Support Coordinator with the help of funding by the Day of Difference Foundation.

Paediatric trauma education for medical, nursing and allied health professionals is provided at WCH and via outreach programs. Contact Jackie Winters, Trauma Clinical Practice Consultant for further information.

The WCH Trauma Service undertakes regular case review to evaluate and improve the system of paediatric trauma management in the State, as well as conducting research into accident prevention and trauma management. The Trauma Service is happy to be contacted by referring doctors if they wish to be involved in discussions regarding specific cases and by clinicians interested in collaborating in trauma research.
