Neonatology

The WCH delivers almost a quarter of all babies born in the state of SA. The WCH nursery provides care at all levels to babies born within WCH, other hospitals in SA and interstate areas such as Mildura, Broken Hill and Alice Springs. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the WCH is unlike most others in Australia because of the broad spectrum of newborns it receives and cares for. It is the largest NICU service in SA providing a high acuity medical and surgical service, some of which are not available anywhere else in the state.

The WCH Nursery provides neonatal advice and support to the recently developed, stand alone transport service MedSTAR Kids.

The Department works closely with other WCH paediatric subspecialties and allied health departments. Care is provided by a team of neonatologists, registrars, neonatal nurse practitioners, neonatal intensive care nurses and nurses and midwives.

How to Access the Service

Babies can be referred or transferred by general practitioners, paediatricians, domicilliary midwives or CAYHS midwives after discussion with neonatologist.

A stand alone emergency transport service for sick newborns is provided by MedSTAR.

Follow up appointments are mostly arranged prior to discharge from hospital but can also be made by calling the neonatal outpatient clinic. Access for request of retrieval/consultations can be obtained by calling (08) 8161 7868.

Information for Families

Babies can be brought to the Women's Assessment Service for common neonatal problems eg feeding, jaundice.

Please bring your baby's Child and Youth Heath record (blue book) whenever you visit the WCH.
