For Patients

Gender Diversity

Children and adolescents who are gender diverse are part of the spectrum of human diversity. Those who are gender diverse may experience Gender Dysphoria, which is characterised as distress arising from the incongruence between a persons’ gender identity and their assigned and/or presumed gender at birth..

The Women's and Children's Hospital Gender Diversity team aims to improve the health, wellbeing and function of gender diverse South Australian children and young people.

How to access the service

Gender Diversity Adolescent Medicine appointments are held at the WCH Paediatric Outpatient department (Level 1, Rogerson Building Zone A). Gender Diversity Psychiatry appointments are held in the Department of Psychological Medicine (Level 1, Good Friday Building Zone C).

The Gender Diversity Team will accept new referrals across South Australia for any child or young person up to the age of 17 years with concerns regarding their gender identity.

A written referral should be sent to the Department of Psychological Medicine: Fax: (08) 8161 7032 for the Gender Diversity Team. Please ensure that the referral includes specific details of who to contact (eg. young person or parent) to arrange appointments.

The team recognises wellbeing and mental health support for gender diverse children and young people is essential in ensuring optimum social emotional wellbeing and development.

Initial assessment and referral by our specialist Psychiatry team (WCH CAMHS), or a private psychiatrist, is required prior to booking appointments with our Gender Diversity Adolescent Medicine Consultants.

Medical Management

The Gender Diversity Adolescent Medicine Team works with the child or young person and their family to provide individualised care that is consistent with the Australian Standards of Care and Treatment Guidelines for Trans and Gender Diverse Children and Adolescents.

The Gender Diversity Adolescent Medicine Nurse Consultant will provide support to the child or young person with clinical treatment if required. Clinical Treatment usually takes place at WCH in Paediatric Outpatients Department (Level 1 Rogerson Building - Zone A) or in the Paediatric Medical Day Unit (Level 4 – Good Friday Building – Zone C). Where possible, we will try to line up treatment appointments on the same day as other hospital appointments.
